Do you work from home?
Well indeed I do! I was fortunate enough to keep my job after a series of events that otherwise would have left me in a much worse predicament. After a tragic fire in my home in San Diego and my mother passing almost a year later I found myself back in Buffalo. I had been gone for almost 30 years and now I was wondering exactly what I was going to do. I remembered that there were a few co-workers who work remotely so it dawned on me that maybe I could do the same thing.
Now this isn’t the first time I’ve had the opportunity to work from home mind you. When I first moved to California my brother and I started a carpet cleaning business. We called it Master Cleaners. Our motto was: We clean the HECK out of carpets and upholstery, economically! Ahhh… those were the days. So not having a clue what my next move would be, I steeled my resolve and called the owner of my company. I asked if I could work from home and he was quite sympathetic actually and said yes, so here I am!
What are the challenges of working from home?
Whether you work from home for yourself or another company you have to be self-motivated. Especially when you have your own business. Either way you literally have no boss watching over your shoulder so you have to be your own boss. Self Discipline is the key to success. It’s not as easy as it seems believe me but it is definitely more rewarding. Nothing beats the feeling of getting paid from the comfort of your own home.
At one point I was commuting 2 hours to work. One way. Then another 2 and a half hours coming home. My friend you can not put a price on time! When over 4 hours of your life is getting snatched away from you daily, just getting back and forth to work, well that can wear you down after a while. Then of course there’s the price of gas and insurance if you have a car. Along with dealing with traffic and road rage. I say if you have the opportunity to work from home, take it!
How can I work from home?
Just the other day my niece asked me the same question. I remembered a Tumblr post I saw a while ago called 100 Work From Home Opportunities which I had luckily saved in my drafts. Many of the links were either missing or broken however so I did take the time to go through each one and corrected any errors I found. As of the date of this posting all links are working!
As you can see some of these companies are pretty huge. I’m sure for many of them you have to have a specific skill set, education level, and training for them to hire you. A decent amount of them seem like they would hire anyone with a desire to work from home however. Since there are 100 on the list hopefully you’ll find something that’s right for you!
